Can Technology be used to Affect Social Change?

It seems like ever other article I read lately is centered on Myspace and its connections to sexual predators, inappropriate postings, security concerns, cyber bullying and more.

And although I am also concerned about these problems and their implications to the educational world and society at large, I would love to read some news articles about how technology is having (or can have) a positive effect on students’ educations. Since these articles seem to be few and far between, I decided to put some of my thoughts together on this subject.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Committee for Conscience have put together a series of podcasts to keep listeners informed of the day-to-day happenings in Darfur and open a dialogue about how to prevent genocide. Since students learn about the holocaust at several levels in their education, and hopefully educators make note of the various genocides (not sure this is a word) that have occurred throughout history, I thought this sight would be a great way to illustrate the relevance of the topic to society today – and hopefully at least lead to discussions about how to affect change.

TakingITGlobal is another outstanding site that can be utilized to affect change. It was created by two teenagers who want to make a difference in the world.

TakingITGlobal is an international organization – led by youth and empowered by technology. TakingITGlobal connects youth around the world to find inspiration, information and get involved in improving their local and global communities.

Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, with a growing worldwide presence, the organization’s flagship, serves as the most popular online community for young people interested in connecting across cultures and making a difference, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each month.

TakingITGlobal works with global partners from UN agencies, to major companies, and especially youth organizations to build the capacity of youth for development, artistic and media expression, make education more engaging, and involve young people in global decision-making.

Unfortunately I do not have the time to catalogue all of the ways technology can help make a difference in the world; however, I would love to begin a dialogue and start to document ways technology can be used positively in the classroom, not only to teach the curriculum, but to make a difference in the school, the community and the world at large. Please help by contributing any ideas you have to this effort.
