Concept Mapping

Concept mapping, graphic organizers, Thinking Maps… these are all organizational and instructional strategies being encouraged in education. They offer learners a way to organize thoughts in a visual manner, not to mention, they are pretty fun to create and manipulate on the computer.

While searching the Internet I came across an open-source concept mapping tool that seems to be worthwhile – Cmap. The Cmap website is set up as a concept map with information on how to utilize the software as well as a link to download it.

I have been playing around with the software for the last week or so, and I like it. You might want to give it a try.

  1. Mind mapping with our little ones, we have been using a very simple prog called Kidspiration, and for the older ones there is Inspiration. Like our children, our use of it is in its infancy, 5-7 years old,but they handle the concept and graphics independently and that’s what we are after. Thank you for the link to our talkingteds at blogspot. You will also see on the blog, examples of their work in Comiclife, where they pick up skills in direct and indirect speech, to say nothing of photography and verbal communication. The children were over the moon to discover how far away you were, found your place on the map….and are beginning to write more carefully for their global audience. Learning doesn’t always have to be painful eh?

  2. Very amazing site! I wish I could do something as nice as you did…mary
