More Talk About MySpace

According to a recent story on NPR, MySpace has hired Hemanshu Nigam, a former prosecutor from the justice department, to patrol the site and educate users. His hiring comes on the heels of an influx of negative media attention concerning the safety of MySpace. With an estimated 68 million users on MySpace, it is about time they take a proactive approach to attempt to secure the safety of their users. But will it make a difference? Can one person really effect the safety of 68 million users? Certainly one person can’t secure the site through force, so I hope the focus will be on education.

I have become used to reading articles in the media which negatively portray MySpace, so I was a little surprised when I came across this article in today’s Dallas Morning News. The article takes a different slant on MySpace by reporting on the advertising appeal it has for small businesses. It discusses how business owners can easily and effectively stay in touch with customers… hmmm, interesting concept. It seems like it would be a smart move for school districts to adopt this mode of thinking instead of blocking anything even remotely connected with MySpace.
